You Don't Need an Inventory System. You Need to Know What Arrived.

Full inventory management on a construction site is a hard sell. The systems are complex, expensive to implement, and require someone to actually maintain them — counting stock, reconciling discrepancies, updating quantities as materials get consumed. On a job site where conditions change daily and the workforce is focused on building, a perpetual inventory system is almost always more overhead than it's worth.

But not having any visibility into what's on site creates its own set of problems. And those problems show up most painfully when it's time to move on to the next job or estimate the next project.

How many ball valves did level 1 of that school actually consume? How many lengths of pipe did you order for the mechanical room on the last hospital project, and how many were left over? What did a comparable scope actually take in terms of fittings, hardware, hangers, or consumables?

If your answer to any of those questions is "I'd have to dig through old POs" or "someone probably knows," you're estimating the next project on memory and intuition rather than data.
